Showtime's 'Weeds' Ends After 8th Season

Showtime has announced today that their long-running dramedy, 'Weeds' will end after this upcoming eighth season.

'Weeds' premiered in 2005 and has been a standout hit for Showtime. However, the past season, it's seventh, saw a decline in viewership in both the premiere and the finale. With any show entering into its eighth season there are higher chances of cancellation. Most networks that have a standout series that has lasted longer then five seasons usually give the creator and writers a chance to wrap up storylines and let the series end on a high note, instread of the usual cliffhanger.

Showtime just have given the cast and crew the news of season eight being the final season because the creator as well as the two main cast members, Kevin Nealon and Justin Kirk have new TV prospects for the 2012/13 TV season. Justin Kirk has been cast in the new NBC sitcom, 'Animal Practice' and the series will premiere in September. The creator, Jenji Kohan has also been announced as the showrunner and executive producer of the new Netflix original series, 'Orange is the New Black.' Kevin Nealon has also been cast on the new NBC series, 'Isabel' which should premiere at mid-season.
