FOX Renewed 'Fringe' 4 Final Season

FOX has renewed its cult-favourite science fiction drama 'Fringe' starring Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson and John Noble for a fifth and final season.

'Fringe' has been a ratings nightmare over the last two seasons. After it was moved from its Thursday timeslot to its Friday spot in early 2011 the ratings have gone down to almost non-existent. The problem with 'Fringe' is that it's one of the most serialized dramas on TV right now, meaning if you miss just one episode you will be lost forever. This is why the viewership has gone down hill. Once they moved the series to Fridays at 9pm it lost a lot of viewers because most people are not home Friday nights watching live TV. Once you miss one episode the next becomes increasingly difficult to follow.

'Fringe' is distributed to FOX by Warner Brothers and when they announced the fourth season back in April 2011 Warner Brothers cut the cost of the episodes for FOX. This made it easy for FOX to renew it because they got the license to air the show at a low cost. The entire fourth season (currently airing now) is one of the lowest rated/viewed shows on TV.

Being a heavily serialized show, fans have been waiting on for a while to hear whether or not this season would be its last. The writers decided last month that the upcoming season finale could potentially be shown as a series finale but had hoped for one last season to wrap up the 'Fringe' storylines. Well, Warner Brothers cut the licensing costs once again and FOX decided to pick the series up for one final shorted 13 episode season. This is fantastic news because now the writers will have 13 episodes to conclude the series and give fans the proper ending that many series do not get when canceled.

When the current fourth season ends the series will have 87 episodes completed. Syndication likes to have a round number of 100 episodes but will go as low as 88 episodes. With the upcoming final 13 episodes to air this fall, it will bring 'Fringe' up to 100 episodes exactly.

Here is the break down of the five last aired episodes:
Episode 15 - A Short Story About Love - March 23 - 2.87 million viewers
Episode 16 - Nothing As it Seems - March 30 - 3.08 million viewers
Episode 17 - Everything in its Right Place - April 6 - 3.01 million viewers
Episode 18 - The Consultant - April 13 - 2.84 million viewers
Episode 19 - Letters of Transit - April 20 - 3.03 million viewers

Episode 20 'Worlds Apart' will be airing tonight, April 27 and then the two-part season finale will air in two installments, Episode 21 'Brave New World (Part 1)' on May 4 and Episode 22 'Brave New World (Part 2)' on May 11.
